About Us

Named for the seventeenth century farmlands and woodlots west of the colony of New London, the West Farms Land Trust was founded in 1974 by a group of Waterford citizens concerned with preserving natural areas throughout the community. Over the past 26 years, the Trust has conserved and managed 17 properties, as shown on the accompanying map, ranging in size from 1/4 acre to 338 acres.

A private land trust focuses interest on preserving habitats and the needs of the community while working closely with the desires of the private property donors. The Trust operates solely on membership contributions. Your membership support counts a great deal and helps your local Land Trust carry out its mission in conserving lands throughout your community of Waterford. Furthermore, conserving habitats is only the beginning of our responsibilities - all conserved properties need continual oversight, management, and maintenance work to ensure a lasting legacy for you and future generations.

As a volunteer, private, non-profit organization, our Trust relies on individuals and families for its continued support throughout the five districts of Waterford, and we invite you to both enjoy using our properties, which have trails open to the public, and becoming a member of the West Farms Land Trust by downloading and returning the Membership Application. If you can assist us, please indicate in which area(s) you would like to volunteer. As a member, you will be kept abreast of our activities through receiving our Newsletter and being able to attend our Annual Meeting held in September of each year.

Please join us in helping to conserve and protect natural areas in Waterford.
