Sisters Leave A Legacy

Members of the West Farms Land Trust were saddened by the sudden death of board member Kathleen M. Devine on September 25, 2000. Kathleen, who had a deep love for gardening and the land, was also a talented pianist. She held a Bachelor of Science Degree in English and Piano from Hartt College of Music, as well as a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Hartford. Before joining the WFLT Board, Kathleen had worked as Assistant Dean for Hartt College of Music, as Registrar for Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, as a Customer Service Representative for Shawmut Bank, and more recently for the Waterford Youth Services Bureau and Senior Citizens Outreach Center.

Prior to her death, she and her sister, Mildred E. Devine had arranged under terms in their respective wills, to donate six acres of land on Bloomingdale Road that had been in their family for nearly a century. This treasured tract holds many family memories of hikes spent checking for wildflowers lady slippers, trillium, laurel, creeping pine, wintergreen, skunk cabbage and jack-in-the pulpits of jumping over the brooks (occasionally falling in), and seeing white tail deer, red fox, pheasants and the return of the wild turkeys. Throughout their lives, Mildred and Kathleen enjoyed seeing the changing seasons on this lovely piece of land.

In support of Leave A Legacy in Connecticut, Mildred recently transferred title of 199 Bloomingdale Rd. to the WFLT, so that the land they loved so much will be preserved as open space in perpetuity, a haven forever for local plant species and wildlife. Their generous spirit and love of the land will live on through their charitable gift.

The goal of Leave A Legacy, a statewide coalition, is to persuade people in making up their wills, to remember their favorite charities in their estate plans through bequests.
